The International Program of the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, DHHS partners with the U.S. Department of State to support a unique component of the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program, and we need your assistance to identify potential mid career professionals in the areas of:

· Substance Abuse Research, Education, Treatment, and Prevention
· Drug Abuse and Public Health, including HIV/AIDS.

Since 1990, more than 284 fellows from 84 countries have been named NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows, but currently there are more fellowship positions available than qualified candidates.

The NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships in Substance Abuse are a priority for NIDA and other U.S. Government agencies because the fellowships introduce rising experts from low- and middle-income countries to U.S. public health approaches to policy, prevention, and treatment for alcohol, drug, and tobacco abuse.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
International research and exchange collaborations contribute to advances in scientific understanding about drug abuse and addiction. To foster these exchanges, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) partners with the U.S. Department of State to support a unique training program for mid career drug abuse professionals. Through the combination of academic courses at a leading U.S. university and a professional affiliation with an Institute grantee, NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey (Humphrey) Drug Abuse Research Fellows learn about NIDA-supported drug abuse research and the application of research to the development of science-based government policy and prevention and treatment programs.
In addition, NIDA facilitates meetings between fellows and grantees to discuss research funding opportunities and to help identify potential partners for cooperative research to be conducted in the fellows’ home countries.

If you are a mid career professional and want to gain international experience at a premier U.S. research institution, the NIDA Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellowship is just right for you. The fellowship will enhance your work by contributing to your understanding of the scientific basis of drug abuse and addiction. NIDA Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellowship alumni and their U.S. mentors form the nucleus of a network of scientists who exchange information and collaborate on drug abuse research nationally, regionally, and globally.
